RABINDRA-NAZRUL JOYANTI 2010
Harris Theatre, George Mason University
Fairfax,  VA

DHROOPAD, in partnership with the Bengali Patriots of
GMU, engendered another triumphant performance at the
Rabindra-Nazrul Joyanti on September 18, 2010 at the George Mason University Harris Theatre.  The event was to commemorate and to pay tribute to the two Bengali literary giants, Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. The two part event consisted of a musical sketch, Nazrul O Prem: An exploration of the conflict and the consummation of love in Nazrul, and a drama, Bhul Shwargo (The Wrong Paradise), based on a short story by Tagore. Bhul Shwargo unfolds the irony of the modern world like ours and finally celebrates the victory of art over the mad rush of monotonous work in a mistaken paradise.

DHROOPAD is humbled by the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from the audience. Here are a couple noted with gratitude:

Washington DC based online Bengali News Portal, News-Bangla.Com, featured the performance with a title  এক রাশ মুগ্ধতায় ধ্রুপদের অনবদ্য পরিবেশনা’   (DHROOPAD  Amazed the Audience with A Unique Presentation).

         Glimpses from the event:

Mr. Mozharul Hoque, a respected Bengali expatriate elder, expressed his reactions after watching the presentation as.. "Dhroopad did it again. Last night Dhroopad once again presented honoring two towering poets of Bengal: Rabindra Nath Thakur and Nazrul Islam, reaching a quality of unprecedented excellence, a musical soiree on Nazrul’s personal amorous life and a dance drama rendition of Rabindra Nath’s Bhul Shwargo ( Mistaken Heaven).  The performers in the programs were non professional Bengali young men and women from Bengals on either sides of Ganga living far away from their country of origin.  Yet their performances were in no way less impressive, albeit comparable to those of the professionals of Kolkata and Dhaka.

After seeing Dhroopad’s Sojon Badiar Ghat, two years ago I personally thought that it would be impossible for anybody including Dhroopad to present any future program that would ever match much less to exceed in quality.  Last night’s performance shattered that belief that I had.  Looks like Dhroopad is on an ascending track in presenting quality programs to us.  I shall be waiting eagerly for their next hatricks.  I wish them well."

DHROOPAD expresses profound gratitude to all the sponsors, patrons, volunteers, and everyone who helped make the Rabindra-Nazrul Joyanti event a success.
